2008 Dodge nitro in a collision going between 35 and 45 miles per hour had a major rear end accident. Police paramedics and fire came on scene. The air bags never deployed. This vehicle was taken for the air bags emblem recall in 2022. The vehicle should have air bags that deploy.

TAKATA RECALL ON 9-6-2012 MY HUSBAND WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT NOT HIS FAULT. HE WAS THE 3RD CAR IN RIGHT HAND LANE HEADING EAST AT A STOPLIGHT WITH CARS IN THE NEXT LANE ALSO AT THE STOPLIGHT NEXT TO HIM, A TRUCK HIT HIM GOING ABOUT 55-65 MPH AND HIS HEAD HIT THE STEERING WHEEL CAUSING HIM TO HAVE INJURIES REQUIRING LIFEFLIGHT TO A TRAUMA CENTER IN HOUSTON, TX. HE HAD A BRAIN INJURY AND REQUIRED 124 STITCHES IN HIS MOUTH AND A SEVERED SPLEEN. HE HAD A BRAIN BLEED AND IT NEVER FULLY WENT AWAY. MANY VISITS TO THE NEUROSURGEON AND CAT SCANS FOLLOWED FOR A YEAR. HE WAS NEVER ABLE TO GO BACK TO WORK. HE WAS 65 AT THE TIME AND WAS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER AT TEXAS DEPT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. HIS PERSONALITY CHANGED DUE TO THE PAIN HE SUFFERED AND HE DIED 7-2-17 WITH HEADACHES AND A BRAIN BLEED GOING ON. HIS AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED IN THE ACCIDENT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ROLLED AWAY TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A VEHICLE AND THE SECOND TIME, THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER HIM AND CRASHED INTO A DOOR. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THE CONTACT SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AS A RESULT. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE LEVER WAS NOT FUNCTIONING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DECIDED TO SEND AN INVESTIGATOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE BUT DID NOT OFFERED ANY ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE SINCE THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,900 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 28,882.

THE RIGHT SIDE FRONT TIRE OF MY NITRO WAS PUSHED BACK ABOUT 3" FROM ITS NORMAL POSITION. THE CENTER SUPPORT OF THE BUMPER WAS BROKEN AND PUSHED ABOUT 12" INTO THE RADIATOR. AT BEGINNING OF DRIVEWAY WHEN CAR STARTED SPEEDING, I HIT THE BREAKS BUT IT SEEMED TO HAVE NO EFFECT. CHRYSLER DENIES RESPONSIBILITY AND NO LAWYER WANTS TO FIGHT CHRYSLER. I AM NOT PUTTING MY FAMILY'S LIFE IN JEOPARDY WITH THAT CAR. ON 2/18/08 I LEASED A 2008 DODGE NITRO AT CRESTWOOD DODGE. ON 3/31/08 MY WIFE ROUTINELY STARTED THE NITRO, PUT HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE (AND NOT THE GAS) AND ENGAGED THE GEAR FROM PARK TO REVERSE. WITHIN A SPLIT SECOND, THE CAR MADE AN UNUSUALLY LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR BURSTED BACKWARD TAKING OUT THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR GATE AND A PORTION OF THE FENCE ADJACENT TO THE GATE. THIS TOOK HER BY SURPRISE. SHE APPLIED THE BRAKE BUT THE BRAKE WAS NOT ABLE TO ENGAGE AS THE TRANSMISSION HAD TORQUED THE ENGINE SO HARD THAT IT FORCED HER INTO THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE AND THE REAR BUMPER RAMMED INTO A BRICK PILLAR SUPPORTING THE ROOF OF THE FRONT PORCH AND DAMAGED THE CAR. THE IMPACT OF HITTING THE HOUSE AND THE PILLAR EVENTUALLY STOPPED THE MOMENTUM OF THE NITRO. I CALLED THE SERVICE MGR AT CRESTWOOD TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY KNOWN RECALLS ON THE TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONING ON THE NITRO. HE TOLD ME NO. I ASKED HIM FOR ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO. HE REFERRED ME TO THE CHRYSLER CUSTOMER CLAIMS RESOLUTION GROUP. (CCCRG) I FILED A CLAIM WITH THIS CCCRG. THEN WE RECEIVED A FORM LETTER FROM THEM STATING THAT THEY WILL SEND AN INVESTIGATOR TO SEE IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE NITRO. CCCRG INFORMED US THAT AN INVESTIGATION WAS PERFORMED AT DEARBORN COLLISION AND THAT WE WILL RECEIVE AN ANSWER. THEY REFERRED ME TO THE CASE MGR. ON 4/9/08 WE RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT THE INSPECTOR FOUND NO INDICATION OF A MALFUNCTIONING DEFECT. I SPOKE BRIEFLY WITH DEARBORN COLLISION AND ASKED ABOUT THIS INVESTIGATION. THEY STATED THAT THE INVESTIGATOR HARDLY LOOKED AT ANYTHING. NEVER EVEN STARTED THE CAR AND THAT HE WERE IN AND OUT WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. ON 4/10/08 I SPOKE TO THE CASE MANAGER AND DISCUSSED HOW WE CAN JUST GET A NEW LEASE. HE ADVISED ME THAT IF I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP AND ARRANGE A MEETING WITH THE DISTRICT MGR THAT GOVERNS CRESTWOOD DODGE. *TR

I DID RESEARCH AND SAW SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS RE FUSE BOX. INSURANCE ADJUSTER TO EXAMINE 12/7/2020*DT THE CONSUMER PROVIDED PHOTOS. *TR

STARTED VEHICLE AND DROVE A BLOCK WITH HEATER AND WIPERS RUNNING. THE HEATER SHUT OFF AND ON AND THE HORN STARTED BLARING OFF AND ON. DURING THIS TIME THE LOCKS WERE GOING UP AND DOWN TOO. PULLED OVER, TURNED IGNITION TO THE OFF POSITION AND REMOVED THE KEY. THE ENGINE STILL RAN FOR A LITTLE BIT, HORN STILL BLARING, AND FRONT/BACK WIPERS STILL RAN WITHOUT A KEY IN THE IGNITION. EVENTUALLY THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN WITH EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR THE WIPERS. THE WIPERS CONTINUED TO RUN UNTIL WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AWAY A COUPLE HOURS LATER. THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE FUSE BOX AND A TERRIBLE SMELL OF A MELTING ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE I COULD HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING OVER 75 MILES PER HOUR IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS WHEN THIS ALL OCCURRED. THANKFULLY THIS HAPPENED WHILE EXITING A BUSINESS INSTEAD. RECALL NEEDS TO HAPPEN BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. UNFORTUNATELY THE LOCAL SHOP COULDN'T TAKE MY VEHICLE IN TO INSPECT. TRIED OTHER SHOPS IN NEARBY TOWNS PLUS A DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE EITHER. SO I EVENTUALLY HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED FROM EAGLE, CO TO THE DENVER METRO. COST ME NEARLY $600 JUST FOR THE TOW TO MY HOUSE. I STILL NEED TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL GARAGE AND ACCESSED. LOOKS LIKE IT WILL COST PLENTY. THE GARAGE SUGGESTED FIXING THE PROBLEM WAS NOT WORTH THE EFFORT. THE COST TO REMOVE, REPLACE, SERVICE, ADJUST, REPROGRAM, AND INSTALL WOULD EXCEED $5500 AND THAT WOULD NOT GUARANTEE THE VEHICLE TO PROPERLY WORK. BLUE BOOK VALUE FOR PRIVATE SALE IS LISTED AT $5804 WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING PROPERLY. ENDED DONATING VEHICLE TO VEHICLES FOR VETERANS SO THEY COULD PART OUT THE REMAINING ITEMS THAT WERE STILL GOOD. PURCHASED NEW/USED VEHICLE TO REPLACE THE NITRO. I WOULD LIKE TO RECOVER AT LEAST THE BLUE BOOK VALUE OF $5804 IF POSSIBLE. THIS BREAKDOWN HAS CAUSED FINANCIAL HARDSHIP WITHIN OUR HOME.
