The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that occasionally while driving 35 – 65 MPH, the vehicle would shake and hesitate. The vehicle also lost power steering and braking functionality and stalled with an audible tone. There were no warning lights illuminated. On another occasion the vehicle lost motive power and was struck by the vehicle in the rear. There was no physical damage to the vehicle and there was no injury sustained. The police were not notified and both vehicles were able to drive away from the scene. On another occasion the vehicle stalled and was towed to the residence; then towed to the local dealer. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM PICKING UP MY DAUGHTER FROM A SCHOOL EVENT WHEN SUDDENLY MY CAR SLOWED DOWN ON ITS OWN DOWN TO 10 MPH. THEN THE CAR COMPLETELY STOPPED. ON THE CONTROL CONSOLE IT ONLY READ "SERVICE PARK ASSIST" AND THE DRIVE POSITION CONTROLS WHERE ALL HIGHLIGHTED AND BOXED OUT (DRNP). I LOST ALL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN TURNING THE WHEEL. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE BY PRESSING THE GAS AND IT JUST REVVED THE ENGINE AND DID NOTHING ELSE. I SWERVED OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A MEDIAN THAT TOOK OUT THE TIRE AND LEFT DAMAGE TO THE LEFT OF THE CAR UNDER CARRIAGE. I HAD TO SHIFT THE GEAR INTO PARK AND BACK TO DRIVE IN ORDER FOR THE CAR TO START UP AGAIN. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL JEEP CHRYSLER DODGE SERVICE DEPOT AND HAD IT RAN FOR A DIAGNOSTIC FOR AT WHICH TIME THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE FOUND IN THIS MODEL AND EARLIER MODELS AND THAT IT WASN'T COVERED BY THE POWER TRAIN THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED $1100.00 IN REPAIRS TO FIX AN ELECTRONIC TRANSFORMER SHIFT MODULATOR. I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE CAR ON OCTOBER 31 FROM A JEEP CHRYSLER DODGE DEALERSHIP AND LESS THAN THREE WEEKS LATER THE CAR IS FOR CRAP. AND THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND JEEP HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE BUT THEY HAVE FOR THE 2006 MODEL. THIS PROBLEM IS LIFE THREATENING. IT CAN OCCUR AT ANYTIME AT ANY SPEED. IF I WERE ON A EXPRESSWAY MY CHILDREN AND I WOULD PROBABLY BE DEAD. JEEP NEEDS TO BE PURSED FOR THIS ISSUE AND FORCED TO FIX THE DAMAGE ON ANY VEHICLES REPORTING THIS ISSUE. FIRSTLY, THE EVENT THAT BROUGHT THIS LETTER ABOUT TOOK PLACE ON 03/28/2008 AT 7:30 PM. THE JEEP COMMANDER I OWN SMASHED INTO MY HOUSE. WE BEGAN BBQ-ING ABOUT 6:00 PM. WHILE THE FOOD WAS COOKING WE SAT IN MY JEEP WITH THE DOORS OPEN AND ENGINE OFF. (THE PORCH WAS WET) AFTER THE FOOD WAS DONE, I TOOK IT INSIDE AND MY 6 YEAR OLD SON DYLAN STAYED OUTSIDE TO PLAY FOR A FEW MORE MINUTES. DYLAN WAS IN THE FRONT SEAT PRETENDING TO DRIVE. THE KEYS TO THE VEHICLE WERE INSIDE THE HOUSE AND WE LIVE ON A SECLUDED PIECE OF LAND IN THE COUNTRY, SO I SAW NO HARM IN THIS. HOWEVER, A FEW MINUTES LATER WHEN I HEARD A CRASH AND FELT MY HOUSE MOVE, I HAD SECOND THOUGHTS! AT FIRST I DIDN'T ACTUALLY REALIZE WHAT HAD HAPPENED; I WAS SEARCHING THE HOUSE FOR WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED SUCH A RACKET. THEN MY SON CAME IN THE HOUSE HYSTERICALLY CRYING. ALL HE COULD MANAGE WAS, 'THE CAR, THE CAR'. AT FIRST I THOUGHT HE MEANT A TOY CAR AND THEN AS I RUSHED OUTSIDE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF HIS HYSTERIA I DISCOVERED MY JEEP HAD CRASHED INTO MY HOUSE. AS I WAS STUNNED AND STARING AT THE UNBELIEVABLE SITE BEFORE ME, MY SON WAS STILL PANIC-STRICKEN AND SOBBING. I THOUGHT AT FIRST THAT HE HAD TAKEN MY KEYS AND STARTED THE CAR, BUT THE CAR WASN'T RUNNING AND I FOUND MY KEYS NEATLY ON THEIR HOOK, AS ALWAYS. DYLAN COULDN'T MAKE ANY FUNCTIONAL SENTENCES TO EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED SO I BEGAN TO INVESTIGATE. I FOUND THE GEARSHIFT IN REVERSE, BUT THERE WERE NO KEYS IN THE CAR. SINCE I HAD RETRIEVED MY KEYS, I BACKED THE CAR UP TO ITS USUAL POSITION TO CHECK OUT THE DAMAGE. I CONTINUED MY INVESTIGATION AND FOUND THAT EVEN WITH NO KEY IN THE IGNITION AND NO FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE GEARSHIFT WOULD EASILY SHIFT FROM PARK TO ANY OTHER GEAR. SO DUE TO THIS MALFUNCTION, DYLAN'S INNOCENT PRETEND 'DRIVING' BECAME REAL AND RESULTED IN A REAL ACCIDENT THAT COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY INJURED HIM OR ONE OF MY OTHER CHILDREN AND DID REAL DAMAGE THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS MY HOUSE. *TR

Heat shield on the muffler system. I was towing a boat up north and started to smell a burning smell. At first I thought it was an electrical issue, but couldn't identify anything. So I drove another 3 to 4 miles and the back floor boards was smoking filling the car with smoke. I pulled over and the carpet was melting from the heat of the muffler/exhaust under the back seat. When it was inspected the heat shield was not over the area that almost caught fire. This is an issue that Jeep is more than aware of and it's an issue that only happens when these vehicles are towing. They run extremely hot towing and the heat shield is defective. Their are other's that have had this happen and there's no recall! My car is equipped with tow package too and it was turned on before it's even a question. I got a call about a year ago about a family friend was towing a pop up camper and their commander caught on fire and was a total loss! Thank God no one was injured. There needs to be an investigation with people who have commander's.
