MY STEPBROTHER HAD TWO CHEVY COBALTS. THE FIRST ONE HE WRECKED ON A COUNTRY ROAD WHERE HE SKIDDED ON GRAVEL, HIS CAR BURST INTO FLAMES. FORTUNATELY, HE WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. HE REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER COBALT. IN JANUARY 2009 HE HAD ANOTHER WRECK, SINGLE CAR. HIS CAR HIT A POLE AND IMMEDIATELY BROKE OUT IN FLAMES. UNFORTUNATELY FOR MY FAMILY HE WAS NOT ABLE TO GET OUT, HE COULDN'T GET HIS SEAT BELT UNDONE AND THE FLAMES WERE MELTING THE INTERIOR CAUSING CAUSTIC FLAMES. THE POLICEMAN BROKE OUT THE BACK WINDOW TO GET HIM OUT AND THE POLICEMAN WAS HOSPITALIZED FROM SMOKE INHALATION MY BROTHER DIDN'T MAKE IT, HE DIED. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE CHECKED OUT. A BURLEY MAN ALSO DIED IN THE TWO-VEHICLE CRASH, WHICH TOOK PLACE AROUND 6:45 P.M. ON INTERSTATE 84 ABOUT 35 MILES OUTSIDE MOUNTAIN HOME. THREE OTHERS FROM BURLEY WERE INJURED. YOUNG WOMAN, 22, OF NAMPA, WAS DRIVING WEST ON THE INTERSTATE IN A CHEVROLET COBALT. AUTHORITIES AREN'T SURE WHY SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. SHE DROVE INTO THE MEDIAN AND OVERTURNED. HER VEHICLE CONTINUED INTO THE EASTBOUND LANES OF TRAVEL, COLLIDING WITH A NISSAN MAXIMA DRIVEN BY 23- YEAR-OLD YOUNG MAN OF BURLEY. YOUNG MAN DIED AT THE SCENE OF THE CRASH. YOUNG WOMAN WAS TRANSPORTED BY AIR AMBULANCE TO A BOISE HOSPITAL, WHERE SHE LATER DIED. THREE PASSENGERS RELATED TO YOUNG MAN, ALL OF BURLEY...WERE TAKEN BY AIR AMBULANCE TO A BOISE HOSPITAL. BUT THE FACT SHE WAS NOT ON HER CELL PHONE OR OTHERWISE ENGAGED WITH ANY OTHER KNOWN DISTRACTION AND THE FACT THAT HER WRIST WAS SNAPPED BACK RESULTING IN A SERIOUS COMPOUND FRACTURE SUGGESTS THAT THE VEHICLE VIOLENTLY AND SUDDENLY JERKED OUT OF HER CONTROL. WE KNOW THE CHEVY COBALT VEHICLES WERE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR "STEERING PROBLEMS" BY THE NHTSA AND THE INVESTIGATION WAS CLOSED IN JULY 2010. The contact owned a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that while the son was driving at approximately 52 MPH, the vehicle crashed head-on into a second vehicle. During the crash, no air bags had deployed, and the driver sustained fatal injuries. Also, during the crash, the ignition key broke off inside the ignition switch, and the vehicle was destroyed. A police report was taken at the scene, and the vehicle was towed to a police inbound lot and later towed to the home. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The driver of the Cobalt lost control and swerved into the path of a tractor-trailer and collided head-on with the tractor-trailer. The airbag in the Cobalt did not deploy despite significant frontal damage to the Cobalt. A download of the ACU in the Cobalt revealed that the Cobalt's ignition switch was in the accessory position at the time of the crash. The ignition switch recall work had been performed on the Cobalt prior to the crash.
POWER STEERING NOT FIXED ON OPEN RECALL IN 2010 POWER STEERING RACK FAILURE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT IN MOTION 3RD PARTY DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING RACK FAILURE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO FIX.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO BECOME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A UTILITY POLE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES AFTER IMPACT AND THE STEERING COLUMN CAUGHT FIRE. THE DRIVER SUFFERED LEFT KNEE, BACK, NECK, AND HAND INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 154,000.

ON FEBRUARY 21, 2008 3:21 A.M. I WAS CALLED BY ALLEGHENY GENERAL HOSPITAL (AGH) IN PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA TO INFORM ME THAT MY SON WAS TAKEN THERE BY HELICOPTER AND WAS UNRESPONSIVE. HE WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND SUFFERED SEVERE BRAIN TRAUMA. UNFORTUNATELY HE DIED ON FEBRUARY 29, 2008. THIS WAS MY SON'S FIRST "NEW" VEHICLE. WE PURCHASED IT ON 12/3/2007 AND HE DIED IN IT 2 MONTHS LATER. THE VEHICLE IS A 2007 CHEVY COBALT. THE ACCIDENT WAS INVESTIGATED AND THE POLICE BELIEVE MY SON FELL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AS HE CROSSED THE CENTER LINE OF A 2 LANE ROAD AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE PERSON IN THE OTHER VEHICLE SURVIVED. AFTER RECEIVING THE FIRST RECALL NOTICE ABOUT THE IGNITION SWITCH ISSUE I CONTACTED THE CAR MANUFACTURER (GENERAL MOTORS) TO INQUIRE ABOUT WHETHER THEY WOULD INVESTIGATE THE VEHICLE TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS DEFECTIVE AND COULD HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. I WAS TOLD BY A GM REPRESENTATIVE THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AS THEY HAD FILED BANKRUPTCY. I CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THE RECALL NOTICES WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT MY SON'S DEATH IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CHEVY COBALT DEATHS. I FIRST CONTACT THE US DEPT. OF JUSTICE AND GOT NOWHERE. I THEN CONTACTED YOUR ORGANIZATION (NHTSA) - REFERENCE# 614104 AND WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO GO BACK TO GM. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT BOTH ORGANIZATIONS ARE INVOLVED IN AN INVESTIGATION OF GM HOWEVER NOBODY AT EITHER ORGANIZATION SEEMS TO WANT TO TALK TO ME. POWER STEERING MY WHEEL TIGHTENS UP AND IT IS VERY HARD FOR ME TO TURN AND SWITCH CURVEY LANES. *TR

The contact stated that while driving at 55 MPH, a 12-point buck jumped into the roadway, causing the contact to abruptly depress the brake pedal; however, the vehicle skidded and crashed into the buck. No air bags deployed. The vehicle was drivable; however, the vehicle was towed to the residence due to the radiator being damaged. The contact stated that he sustained injuries to his left knee, and his fiancée, who was seated in the front passenger side, sustained injuries to her left knee. The contact stated this morning that he noticed his knee was swollen. No medical attention was sought as of yet. The contact stated that a police report was filed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 16,265.
I was in a crash on 9/19/25 and at the incident none of my airbags deployed. My daily driver for my children and I. I was lucky I was the only passenger at the time. I never expected my airbags not to deploy in a head on crash. The car still sits in my driveway and I have and identical one just like it that I drive! I’d like them evaluated.

THE CONTACT STATED THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILING HAD OCCURRED A FEW TIMES BEFORE THE INCIDENT AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 40-65 MPH. MARKESHIA WAS DRIVING IN HER NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN SHE SWERVED INTO A POLE WHILE TRYING TO AVOID HITTING A STRAY DOG. HER AIRBAG DEPLOYED AND HER 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTERS DID NOT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER ACCIDENT SHE WENT IN AMBULANCE TO TX. CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL WHERE HER DAUGHTER WAS RUSHED TO TRAUMA UNIT FOR IMMEDIATE SURGERY. HER DAUGHTER HAS A PERMANENT BRAIN INJURY.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, BUT IT WAS NOT RELATED TO THE PREVIOUS CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

TAKATA RECALL: MY AIR BAG SIGN PROBABLY IN THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY HAD APPEARED, AND OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE NOT BEEN WORKING. I HAD GOTTEN INTO AN ACCIDENT ON JANUARY 31ST AND THEY DID NOT DEPLOY. I AM NOT POSITIVE IF THIS IS A PART OF THE RECALL SITUATION, BUT IT HAPPENED OUT OF NO WHERE, I JUST TURNED MY CAR ON ONE DAY AND IT STOPPED WORKING.
