TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD WINDSTAR. HE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. HE STATED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL FAILED PRIOR TO RECEIVING THE RECALL NOTICE AND THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE. PRIOR TO THE FIRE THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NEED PERFORM A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. FORD CONFIRMED THAT THE SWITCH SHOULD BE REPAIRED WITHOUT DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPAIRS. THE FAILURE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V399000, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN. UPDATED 11/08/10 * BF ACCORDING TO THE PAPERWORK, THE CONSUMER WAS IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE POWER STEERING FAILING. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED ALL OF THE COMPONENTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED. UPDATED 11/10/10

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL BANG. THE VEHICLE CABIN WAS IMMEDIATELY FILLED WITH SMOKE AND THE CONTACT MOVED OFF THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT WAS ASSISTED BY A STATE TROOPER AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THE REAR AXLE HAD FAILED BUT DID NOT EXHIBIT SIGNS OF WEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT WITH THE MECHANIC WHERE HE WAS AWAITING REPAIRS TO THE AXLE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH HAD THE TRAFFIC BEEN HEAVIER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS A DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V030000 (STRUCTURE); HOWEVER, THE CONTACT NEVER RECEIVED THE NOTICE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000.

THE CONTACT ALSO HAD PICTURES OF THE CRASH. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2000 WINDSTAR ON THE SKUYKILL EXPRESSWAY ON MONDAY, JULY 19, 2010 AT 12:33 PM ON MY WAY TO AN APPOINTMENT. ABOUT A QUARTER MILE BEFOR THE GILPH MILLS EXIT HEADING EAST, I WAS IN THE PASSING LANE TRAVELING ABOUT 55-60 MPH, WHEN THERE WAS A LOAD "POP" FROM THE REAR OF MY VAN. I IMMEDIATELY LOST CONTROLL OF THE VAN AND IT SLID ACROSS THE HIGHWAY . I FIRST HIT THE EMBANKMENT OFF THE SHOULDER, WAS THROWN BACK INTO THE HIGHWAY AS THE VAN SLIDE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND THEN FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN. THE VAN CAME TO REST IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SKUYKILL EXPRESSWAY UPSIDE DOWN, FACING THE TRAFFIC. THANK GOD ALL TRAFFIC STOPPED AND NO ONE HIT ME, AND I DIDN'T HIT ANYONE.. THE VAN WAS TOTALLED. I SUFFERED HEAD INJURIES, AS WELL AS BROKEN AND BRUISED RIBS IN MY BACK, AS WELL AS SEVERE MUSCLE DAMAGE. I WAS ABLE TO UNHOOK MY SEAT BELT AND CRAWL OUT THE WINDOW, AND I WAITED TILL HELP CAME. AS I LOOKED AT THE UPSIDE DOWN VAN, I DID SEE THAT THE REAR AXLES WAS SPLIT IN HALF. I WAS TAKEN TO BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT, AND RELEASED SEVERAL DAYS LATER. I STILL HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GO BACK TO WORK BECAUSE OF MY BACK ISSUES. *TR

I WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD-ON ACCIDENT ON A FREEWAY. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE HAD FALLEN ASLEEP, AND, THEREFORE, HAD NOT SLOWED DOWN HER VEHICLE. THE IMPACT TOOK THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL OFF MY VEHICLE AND WE ROLLED PART WAY OVER UNTIL THE DITCH STOPPED MY VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE WAS CLAIMED A TOTAL LOSS. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I HAVE A PHOTO OF THE VEHICLE AFTER THE ACCIDENT AND THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY LOCATED IN BRANDYWINE, MD AT THE INSURANCE AUTO AUCTION WAITING FOR A SALE DATE. I CONTACTED FORD TO SEE IF THEY COULD ASSIST IN FINDING OUT WHY THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THEY TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE AIRBAGS CHECKED AT A FORD DEALER, THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THIS ANSWER WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME, SINCE IT WOULD SEEM THEY SHOULD BE CONCERNED AS TO WHY THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT FAILED. I AM HOPING NHTSA CAN ASSIST ME IN FINDING OUT THE REASON FOR THE FAILURE.
