MY BEAUTIFUL 32-YR. OLD DAUGHTER WAS KILLED RECENTLY WHEN THE VEHICLE SHE WAS DRIVING, A 2004 JEEP LIBERTY, WAS REAR-ENDED ON THE INTERSTATE BY A FORD F-150 GOING 60 MPH. WITHIN SECONDS OF THE IMPACT, HER VEHICLE EXPLODED AND BURST INTO FLAMES. AS A RESULT, MY DAUGHTER BURNED TO DEATH. SINCE MY DAUGHTER'S DEATH, I HAVE LEARNED THAT THE FUEL TANK AND FILLER NECK ON THE JEEP LIBERTY (AND JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE) WAS DESIGNED AND INSTALLED IN A LOCATION (BEHIND THE REAR BUMPER) THAT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO RUPTURE OR PUNCTURE IN A REAR-END COLLISION. WHEN GASOLINE ESCAPES FROM A RUPTURED OR PUNCTURED FUEL TANK, A HIGH RISK OF FIRE AND EXPLOSION EXISTS. BECAUSE OF THIS TERRIBLE TRAGEDY AND TREMENDOUS LOSS OF SUCH A BEAUTIFUL LIFE, I FEEL AN OBLIGATION TO WARN EVERYONE OF THE POTENTIAL DANGER WHEN DRIVING THESE VEHICLES. CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS THEY HAVE HAD OTHER LAWSUITS REGARDING FIRES AND FUEL TANK EXPLOSIONS, BUT IT'S LESS COSTLY FOR THEM TO SETTLE OUT OF COURT THEN TO REDESIGN OR RECALL THE VEHICLE. CHRYSLER DOESN'T WANT THE PUBLIC TO KNOW, BUT I THINK THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE, WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, THE DRIVER WALKED 15 FEET AWAY, AND THEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL BACKWARD DOWN A HILL INTO A POND. THE VEHICLE GAINED SPEED WHILE ROLLING DOWN THE HILL AND THE DOORS AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED. THE CONTACT'S INFANT WAS STILL INSIDE THE VEHICLE WHEN IT ROLLED INTO THE WATER. BOTH THE CONTACT AND THE FATHER-IN-LAW SWAM 40 FEET FROM SHORE TO THE VEHICLE AND RETRIEVED THE BABY. ONCE THE CHILD WAS OUT OF THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT BEGAN TO SWIM TO SHORE, THE BABY AND CONTACT MADE IT SAFELY TO SHORE. THE FATHER-IN-LAW HAD A HEART ATTACK IN THE WATER AND PASSED AWAY ON THE SCENE. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED AND A REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE CONTACT AND BABY WERE ADMITTED TO INTENSIVE CARE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER REPRESENTATIVES WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTED THAT WAS ADDRESSED IN NHTSA RECALL #05V460000 ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. *AK

A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER BACK, NECK, LEFT ARM, AND LEFT LEG. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000.

THE FIRE CHIEF STATED AND REPORTED THAT THE FIRE MORE THAN LIKELY BEGAN IN THE REAR. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BURNS TO HIS LOWER LEG. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR DIAGNOSED BUT DEEMED AS TOTALED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE STOPPED DUE TO A TRAFFIC BACK-UP ON THE RAMP AT THE I-271/I-480 INTERCHANGE, THE VEHICLE WAS CRASHED INTO THE REAR BY ANOTHER VEHICLE (GMC SUV) DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 48 MPH. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE REAR OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE INSTANTLY BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE CONTACT'S MOUTH STRUCK THE STEERING WHEEL AND HIS UPPER FACE WAS THROWN INTO THE WINDSHIELD. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE FACE, LOSS OF HIS UPPER TEETH, A FRACTURED CHEEKBONE AND NOSE. THE CONTACT ALSO SUSTAINED BURNS TO THE LEFT HAND, WRIST, UPPER FOREHEAD, LEFT EYE AND EAR, RIGHT ANKLE AND THE LEFT KNEE. THE CONTACT ALSO SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 152,000. TL* - ON 01/07/04 WHILE DRIVING ON A WET ROAD AT A SPEED OF 25 MPH THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. DURING ANOTHER INCIDENT THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS STOPPED BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN. ONCE THE VEHICLE TURNED, CONTACT ACCELERATED AND SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE DID A 360 SPIN, ENDING IN A SNOW BANK. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE WET. IN LATE FEBRUARY 2004 THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED ANOTHER INCIDENT, WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS GOING UP A HILL IN WET CONDITIONS AND AS THE VEHICLE ROUNDED THE CURVE AT 40 MPH CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING ,CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A SNOW BANK. ON 03/09/04 CONTACT TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP IN BOISE, ID ,AND THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS FINE, IT JUST NEEDED SNOW STUDS ON THE TIRES. ON 04/05/04 WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH THE VEHICLE BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND STEERED TOWARD THE RIGHT SIDE OF A DITCH, THEN GOING BACK INTO THE HIGHWAY AT THE SAME SPEED, AND THEN GOING BACK INTO THE DITCH AT 65 MPH. AT THIS POINT, THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE DITCH AND HIT THE EMBANKMENT OF A DRIVEWAY AND CATAPULTED OFF THE DRIVEWAY 20 FEET INTO THE AIR, WHERE IT HIT A POWER POLE HEAD ON. THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE ROLLING OVER THE A FENCE AND CONTINUED TO ROLL AS IT BURNED. THE CONTACT WAS UNCONSCIOUS, A BYSTANDER PULLED THE CONTACT OUT THE VEHICLE.
MY WIFE WAS IN A MVA WITH OUR 2004 JEEP LIBERTY WITH 30,000 MILES ON IT, SHE WAS HIT FROM BEHIND BY A PLYMOUTH NEON AT ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR UPON IMPACT THE JEEP WHICH I THOUGHT WAS ONE OF THE SAFEST VEHICLES ON THE HIGHWAY BURST INTO FLAMES THANK GOD MY WIFE ACTED FAST AND GOT HERSELF AND HER NIECE AND NEPHEW OUT WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES IF SOMETHING HAD JAMMED OR NOT WORKED RIGHT AFTER THE IMPACT THEY WOULD BE DEAD, WITH IN MINUTES OF THEM GETTING OUT OF THE JEEP IT BLEW INTO A GIANT INFERNO I CAN SAY THAT GOD WAS WATCHING OVER THEM THAT DAY. I HAVE SINCE DONE RESEARCH AND THIS ISSUE AND IT HAS BEEN AN ON GOING THING WITH JEEP SINCE 1995 HOW CAN THIS BE ALLOWED JUST FOR THEM TO MAKE THE ALL MIGHTY DOLLARS. The contact stated that while driving at 20 MPH going through the green traffic light her vehicle had been hit by another vehicle in the intersection passing a red light. The contact stated that her vehicle was crashed head-on, however, the air bags did not deploy. The contact stated that a police report was filed, and the vehicle was towed. The contact stated that the ambulance was dispatched to the scene to evaluate her, and had determined that she was okay at the time and did not have to go to the hospital. The contact stated that she only suffered from a few bruises. The manufacturer nor the dealer were notified of the failure. The mileage failure was 200,000.

WAS GOING DOWN A HILL. DIDN'T NOTICE A STOP SIGN. TRIED TO STOP BUT COULDN'T IN TIME. TOOK THE CORNER AND HIT A TREE WITH MY PASSENGER FRONT CORNER AND THE JEEP FLIPPED ON ITS SIDE. SMASHED MY FACE ON THE STEERING WHEEL SHATTERING MY JAW DUE TO AIRBAGS NOT GOING OFF AND SEATBELTS NOT LOCKING. NEEDED IMMEDIATE SURGERY. THEY HAD TO SMASH THE FRONT WINDOW TO GET ME OUT OF THE VEHICLE.

I WAS IN ACCIDENT ON SEPT 27 AND THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY UNTIL THE VEHICLE STOPPED IT TOOK ABOUT 5MINS AFTER ACCIDENT THEN THERE WAS A SMELL LIKE RUBBER AND IT JUST WENT POOF DIDN'T MAKE CONTACT WITH MY FACE OR BODY. I WAS RECENTLY IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE A TRUCK DRIVING ERRATICALLY SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES CAUSING A 3 CAR PILE UP, IN WHICH I WAS CAUSED TO REAR END THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AT ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR. THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY CAUSING MY FACE/HEAD / CHEST TO HIT THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO CAUSING SEVERE NECK PAIN AND OTHER INJURY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO PURSE THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE DEFECT.
