MY FATHER WAS DRIVING A 2006 CAMRY. HE WAS BACKING INTO A PARKING SPOT AT A SUPERMARKET SHOPPING CENTER IN PALISADES PARK, NJ. HE DECIDED TO GO FORWARD AND THEN BACK UP AGAIN. WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO GO FORWARD SLOWLY AND BRIEFLY, THE ACCELERATOR OPENED FULL-THROTTLE. HE ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE AS HARD AS HE COULD BUT THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING. HE HIT TWO PEOPLE WHILE TRYING TO BRING THE CAR UNDER CONTROL AND THEN SLAMMED INTO A LONG ROW OF SHOPPING CARTS. THE CAR SHUT OFF ONCE IT COLLIDED WITH THE CARTS. ONE OF THE PERSONS WAS KILLED. THE OTHER SUSTAINED A BROKEN ARM. THE CAR WAS EXAMINED BY THE PALISADES PARK POLICE AND FOUND TO HAVE NO OBSERVABLE DEFECT WITH THE ACCELERATOR. MY FATHER HAD THE CAR FIXED AND ENDED UP SELLING IT, SO IT IS STILL ON THE ROAD. I WOULD HAVE TO SEARCH HIS FILES AND SEE IF ANY INFORMATION WAS SAVED ABOUT THE CAR. TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, HE NOTICED A BURNING ODOR. ANOTHER DRIVER NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND ALERTED THE CONTACT. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, BUT THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RESPOND AFTER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL CONTINUOUSLY. THE CONTACT JUMPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT CRASHED INTO THE DIVIDER ON THE ROAD. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED SEVERE SCRAPES TO HER LEFT FOOT, LEGS, AND ARMS. THE CONTACT WAS THEN TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. AFTER BEING RELEASED, THE CONTACT SUFFERED MUSCLE SPASMS AND WAS RUSHED BACK TO THE HOSPITAL FOR FURTHER TREATMENT. THE FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS REPORTED TO THE SCENE AND REPORTS WERE FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A JUNK YARD WHERE THE INSURANCE COMPANY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND SENT AN INSPECTOR TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS UNDETERMINED, BUT THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT THERE WAS CORROSION FOUND ON THE AIR CONDITIONER HOSE. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT SUPPLY THE CUSTOMER WITH THE INVESTIGATION REPORT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 137,000.

THE CAR LUNGED AHEAD AND STEADILY PICKED UP SPEED. THE CAR HIT A LADY WALKING WITH HER GROCERIES, THEN HIT A PARKED VEHICLE AND PUSHED IT INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAG NEVER DEPLOYED. THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK. THE ONLY THING THAT MADE IT STOP WAS THAT IT HIT A LARGE SUV. MY WIFE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO FASTEN HER SEAT BELT, THUS SUSTAINING INJURIES. IT ALL HAPPENED IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT FILED. I WAS NOT CHARGED WITH THE ACCIDENT. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE ON MAY 24, 2017 AT A PUBLIC AUCTION IN WASHINGTON, DC. THAT MEANS THAT THESE VEHICLES ARE STILL BEING SOLD AS IF THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THEM. THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 240,000 MILES WHEN I PURCHASED IT. WHEN WE CHECKED THE INTERNET, WE FOUND THAT THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS. BEWARE!!!

I TRIED TO STOP THE CAR WITH THE BRAKE, BUT THE CAR DID NOT STOP. DURING THIS AWFUL EVENT, MY CAR CRASHED INTO TWO DIFFERENT CARS, ONE OF WHICH WAS OCCUPIED, AND ONE OF WHICH WAS PARKED WITH NO OCCUPANT. FINALLY, MY CAR CAME TO A STOP. THE AIR BAGS IN MY CAR DID NOT DEPLOY. PARAMEDICS AND POLICE CAME TO THE SCENE. THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT. I WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND CHECKED. MY UNDERSTANDING FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS THAT THERE IS A CLAIM FOR INJURY BY ONE OF THE INDIVIDUALS IN THE OCCUPIED CAR. MY CAR WAS IMPOUNDED. MY INSURANCE COMPANY HAS INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS, AND HAS BEEN BRANDED NON-REPAIR. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY THAT THEY AND TOYOTA WILL CONDUCT A JOINT INVESTIGATION OF THE CAR. NOTE: AS I READ AND UNDERSTAND THE SAFERCAR.GOV WEBSITE (POWERED BY NHTSA), IT APPEARS THAT AS OF THIS DATE, THERE ARE 625 COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY, WITH APPARENTLY 249 OF THEM ALMOST 40% REPORTED IN THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL CATEGORY. THE REPORTS LIST NUMEROUS INJURIES AND EVEN DEATHS. I REQUEST THAT NHTSA INVESTIGATE THE MATTER OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IN THE 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKING, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH THROUGH A GUARDRAIL AND LAND ON ITS ROOF. THE CONTACT DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
