MY NEPHEW DIED IN A FIRE AFTER HE WAS IMPACTED FROM THE REAR WHILE AVOIDING DEBRIS/PEOPLE IN THE HIGHWAY. THE JEEP'S LEFT REAR IMPACTED THE TRACTOR TRAILER'S FRONT (RIGHT FRONT?); THE JEEP SPUN 180 DEGREES, IMPACTED THE OPENED LIFT GATE OF A PICK-UP TRUCK STOPPED ON THE BREAKDOWN LANE, BOUNCED OFF AND IMPACTED THE GUARDRAIL. IT APPEARS ALL THREE IMPACTS WERE TO THE REAR OR LEFT REAR OF THE JEEP. IT APPEARS THE JEEP'S DRIVER WAS ON FIRE BEFORE HE WAS EJECTED FROM THE JEEP. UPDATED 2/12/14*CN

WH CONTACT GALEN MAIN (202) 456-2176- CASE: WH 02072013-296. *TGW THE CONSUMER WROTE IN CONCERNING A 1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE THAT WAS HIT FROM BEHIND IN STOPPED TRAFFIC AND BURST INTO FLAMES, BEFORE THE TWO OCCUPANTS WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE. THE 1993-2004 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE HAS A PLASTIC TANK LOCATED BEHIND THE REAR AXLE. THE GAS TANK IS LARGER AND EVEN EXTENDS BELOW THE REAR BUMPER WHERE A LOW-FRONT-END VEHICLE CAN RIDE UNDER IT AD RIP THE TANK OPEN.

THE REAR END OF THE JEEP STRUCK THE REAR END OF A PARKED CAR IN THE STREET. A MAN WAS UNDER THE FRONT END OF THE PARKED CAR PERFORMING AN OIL CHANGE. THE PARKED CAR PINNED THE MAN WHO SUFFERED INTERNAL INJURIES AND DIED THE NEXT DAY IN THE HOSPITAL. *AK

ON THE EVENING OF DECEMBER 1, 1998, I HAD MY 1998 GRAND CHEROKEE IN PARK WITH THE DOOR OPEN WHILE I WAS GETTING MY MAIL FROM A BANK OF MAILBOXES. WHILE I WAS OUT OF THE CAR, IT STARTED TO ROLL BACKWARDS, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SITTING ON LEVEL GROUND. THE OPEN DOOR HIT THE BANK OF MAILBOXES AND I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO THE CAR TO STOP IT. I REPORTED THIS TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY SINCE I NEEDED TO HAVE THE DRIVERS DOOR REPLACED. THE CAR WAS IN PARK, AND AFTER I GOT IN TO STOP IT FROM ROLLING BACKWARDS, IT WAS STILL IN PARK. I NEVER REPORTED THIS TO JEEP BECAUSE NO ONE BELIEVED ME AND IT HAS NOT HAPPENED SINCE THEN. THE JEEP WAS LEASED, AND I TURNED IT IN ON JUNE 27, 2001 TO GENE'S CHRYSLER IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA. HOWEVER, AFTER READING ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER JEEPS IN THE LA TIMES, I WANTED TO FILE MY COMPLAINT ALSO.*AK

I OWN A 1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO. IT WAS IN PARK WHEN IT SUDDENLY WENT INTO REVERSE ON ITS OWN. IT KNOCKED MYSELF OVER AND DRAGGED ME WITH MY HAND SLAMMED IN THE DOOR. IT FINALLY CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT HIT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL CAUSING MASSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. I FOUND OUT AFTER THE CRASH THAT THERE WAS A RECALL THAT I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF FOR THE FAULTY SHIFTER. I ALSO LEARNED THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY INCIDENTS LIKE MINE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING AND THAT I SHOULD CALL DAIMLER-CHRYSLER. I CALLED DAIMLER AND THEY REFUSED TO GET ME A RENT-A-CAR AND ONLY SAID THAT A PERSON WOULD BE OUT TO LOOK AT MY VEHICLE. I WANT MY MEDICAL BILLS PAID AND MY JEEP FIXED. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IS TOO MUCH TO ASK. HELP ME GET SOME JUSTICE AND STOP THESE INCIDENTS BEFORE MORE PEOPLE ARE INJURED AND KILLED. *JB

THE PASSENGER HAS NECK SPASMS AND SUSTAINED BRUISING ON EXTREMITIES. THE VEHICLE IS TOTALED. THE AIR BAGS DID DEPLOY IN THE EVENT. THE SEAT WAS IN THE FULL REARWARD POSITION AND WAS SEATED NORMALLY. THE PASSENGER CLAIMS THAT THEY WERE NOT OUT OF POSITION. CW CONSUMER CALLED BACK STATING THAT THEY INSPECTED THE PASSENGER'S FRONT SEAT BELT AS PER A REQUEST BY ODI. THE WEBBING WAS TUGGED NUMEROUS TIME BUT WOULD SELDOM LOCK UP AS A RESULT OF THE QUICK JERKS ON THE WEBBING. ALSO STATED THAT THE PASSENGER HIT HEAD ON THE WINDSHIELD CAUSING IT TO BREAK. CW
